On the scene at the Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Scene
We had great success launching our new eBay tutorial at the Country Music Association Awards so we picked the Sundance Film Festival to showcase our new Learn Wireless Networking tutorial. And we weren’t disappointed.

First, if you are into film at all, make sure you attend the festival at least once. Park City, Utah is an absolute gem of a town and ski resort. And you can imagine how lively it gets during the festival! But the traffic is unbelievable!!

I want to personally thank several stars including Chazz Palmenteri
, (A Bronx Tale) Joe Pantoliano, (The Sopranos, The Fugitive) Oscar Winner Mary Matlin (who also has turned in some terrific performances on The West Wing) and Ally Sheedy, (The Breakfast Club) Ronald Reagan Jr. (That name sounds familiar) Harry Shearer, (Spinal Tap, The Simpsons) among others, for dropping by our display while we were at Sundance. They all took time to sign a limited edition Sundance Film Festival poster, of which just 300 were produced this year. The autographed poster will be up for auction on eBay shortly, with 100% of the proceeds going to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

We often hear about the huge egos with some movie stars, but that certainly wasn’t the case with the stars we met at Sundance. All were friendly, down-to-earth and they all shared very inspirational stories about their own lives with attendees. And because of their kindness, some money is going to St. Jude’s! We also had some fun with the folks from Bravo! and did several interviews with various Internet trade publications covering the Sundance Film Festival. Look for me on the Bravo in March. We’ll keep you posted.

Our “Learn Wireless Networking” tutorial was very popular with Sundance attendees, also topping the most requested list were our eBay, PhotoShop and Excel tutorials.


Dangerous precedent?
A major confrontation is shaping up between Google and the Federal Government. The government wants Google to hand over records of searches conducted using Google. Google says “no way.” The precedent about privacy could have major implications.

Off Topic
The difference between winners and losers
The folks here in the Denver area are still smarting (as are the Broncos) from the loss to Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game. There was a telling shot late in the game, when the CBS cameras pointed at QB Jake Plummer on the sideline, sucking oxygen, hair hanging down to his knees. A beaten man who’d given up. That shot was in contrast to Texas QB Vince Young at the Rose Bowl. His team was down 10 with 6 minutes left, and Vince was NOT sitting down. He was cheering on his team, telling them, to believe, that they could win and would win. That’s called leadership.

One last note from Sundance: Several of the stars shared many stories of difficult time in their own careers, when literally there was no money, and no options. But the successful ones didn’t give up. They kept on trying, going for that 11th audition after being turned down in first 10. And then there was Jake Plummer, head down in defeat, sucking oxygen. And that’s why he lost, because he gave up.

Speaking of sports
The final four go at it this weekend. It's the Broncos vs. Steelers for the AFC Championship and the Seahawks vs. the Panthers for the NFC title. The Steelers and Panthers are definite road warriors, and will need to pull off yet another road win to make it to Super Bowl XL. And doesn’t the Roman Numerals XL seem appropriate this year! Four classy franchises, with four very strong coaches and four organizations that put teamwork ahead of individual stardom. No matter who wins, this year’s championship should be the proverbial “Humdinger!”

It just may be true that everyone has a double somewhere. Apparently mine is a Canadian running for Prime Minister! A reporter for the CBC in Canada noticed the similarity and that’s how I found out about it.

News from the Consumer Electronics show
Wow! Imagine 28 football fields full of electronic toys! And last week’s Consumer Electronics Show delivered a lot of news! It was a world of 100-inch wide plasma screens, and screens small enough to fit into your pocket. Wires? Old School. Some observers say it’s just getting to complicated for most folks and the worry is those folks might sit on their wallets until they figure it all out. H-m-m-m, sounds like plenty of opportunity for new tutorials! Stay tuned!!

Retirement? Why?
Much is being said about the first of the “Baby Boomer” generation turning 60 this year. I think the real news is that people are living and working longer than ever. 80 year old Marv Levy just went back to work for the Buffalo Bills, 79-year-old Joe Paterno coached Penn State to an Orange Bowl Victory and intrepid CBS reporter Mike Wallace is 87! Warren Buffet is in his late 70’s and Kirk Kekourian continues to run his multi-billion dollar empire at the age of 86! All have jobs that would stress out people more than half their age! Yet they seem to thrive on the challenge.

Young, and young Vick: A cautionary tale.
Now-former Texas Longhorn Vince Young has a golden arm, golden feet and a golden future. No one is blaming him, including the whole state of Texas, for coming out early. Vince Young put on a display at the Rose Bowl for the ages. Vince Young is a very classy young man who always goes out of his way to share the credit for his success. Some have said he may not be ready for the NFL. I think it’s the other way around. He’s going to give defensive coordinators fits.

Then there’s Marcus Vick. Just kicked off the Virginia Tech football team for being, well, stupid, he declared himself available for the NFL draft and to impress NFL teams, he now finds himself charged with pulling a gun on some people in a parking lot. And this isn’t his first brush with the law. His police file is growing while his stock is sinking faster than the Titanic.

Good people finish first. Always. Congrats Vince. You’re a terrific young man and a role model for anyone to follow. As for Marcus, 5-6th round maybe, and likely to the Raiders. Ha!

Last Call to Deck the Hall(s)


Video Professor employees making a difference
Video Professor employees are something special. They have their own volunteer club called “Seasons.” This is an especially busy time for the club. They donated over 1,166 food items to the JeffCo Action Center to make sure needy families had everything they needed for a nice Thanksgiving.

And this week the Salvation Army dropped by TWICE to pick up items donated through the Giving Tree Project. During this special time of the year, our headquarters takes on the look of a department store filled with scooters, bicycles, dolls and all sorts of presents for kids and seniors. A total of 150 gift requests were filled!

Rebates-use them!
I urge you to read a fascinating article about rebates in the December 5 issue of BusinessWeek. Did you know that 40% of rebate offers never get redeemed? That adds up to more than 2-billion dollars of extra revenue for retailers and suppliers. BusinessWeek reports that many consumers are “just too lazy, forgetful or busy to apply for rebates.” For those of you who do take the time (and it’s worth it!) keep the pressure up on some of the companies that take a little longer than promised to redeem your rebate. But rebates can make for some incredible bargains.

Saddam on trial
Saddam Hussein can bluster all he wants, but he’s the one sitting in the cage. His latest rant was about having to take the stairs up to the courtroom because the elevator wasn’t working. Sadly, this trial will take forever and a day. But justice will rule out and Hussein will pay dearly for his crimes. He’s right where he belongs.

See it Now, again.
Finally, it’s rare these days that a movie deserves a second look, but in the case of “Good Night and Good Luck,” you should. The message is especially relevant. In the movie, we see how Senator Joe McCarthy realized that he could smear anyone, anytime, simply by speaking into a microphone and the facts be darned. Once what McCarthy said was “out there” the damage was done, regardless of accuracy. The Internet is an extraordinary part of our culture, but like anything else, it can be abused and it’s too bad a few people are abusing the Internet for misinformation and half-truths. Just because it’s on the ‘net, doesn’t make it true. But just like Ed Murrow, we can and should, stand up to bullies because when you do, they cave, and quickly.

Video Professor at the Country Music Awards!
When you want to learn how to use computer programs like Word, HTML, Photoshop…and now eBay, you call the Video Professor. When you want to put a smile on the faces of celebrities such as Martina McBride, John Rich, Lee Ann Womack, Willie Nelson, George Strait and many more, simply put them in front of the Video Professor banner backstage at the 2005 Country Music Awards and watch their reactions!

We launched our new eBay tutorial lesson at the CMA Celebrity Showcase to show country stars and their fans, just how easy it is to buy and sell their favorite country memorabilia on eBay.

When presented with Video Professor’s newest learning lesson, How to Buy and Sell on eBay, Martina McBride smiled and exclaimed, “Oh, I need to give this to my brother Marty! He puts all my memorabilia on there and sells it!”

“This will really come in handy,” said a smiling Steve King [master of the keyboards for the Keith Urban Band], “I’ve been wanting to learn this!” Other Country Music legends such as Lee Ann Womack, Big & Rich, Montgomery & Gentry, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley all stopped by the Product Showcase Room this weekend as well, where they too smiled and enjoyed the uniqueness of the Video Professor product display.

“Oh, I love that guy,” exclaimed Faith Hill’s band leader Jimmy Nichols, referring to Video Professor CEO and Founder John W. Scherer, “I see him all the time on TV!” Then, in his best product-pitch style, he mimicked, “Try my product! Try my product!” the popular slogan of the Video Professor.

“I actually have (the Video Professor) Photoshop tutorial already,” explained Bobby Boyd (lead singer of the Bobby Boyd Band). In fact, in addition to the new eBay lesson, many of the stars backstage picked up the Photoshop lesson as well. Stars from Vinny Kuliah to Rachael Warwick chose from more than 40 other titles Video Professor had on display at this star-studded showcase.

Baseball gets real. 50, 100 and you’re out of here.
Major League Baseball and the Players Union have agreed on some incredibly tough rules against the use of Steroids. Beginning with the 2006 season a player caught using steroids is out for 50 games. 50 games is 1/3 of a season by the time a player would get back in shape. A 2nd offense gets you a 100 game suspension, which really means a full season and a 3rd puts you out of baseball for life. It’s about time.

Why what we’re doing is important
France. Forgetting (again) the past, doomed (again) to repeat it.
In the years leading up to World War II, France (as they did prior to World War I) hid its head under a blanket, hoping that Germany would go away. Germany didn’t, and invaded France. The United States and its Allies came to the rescue. In the fight against terrorism, France, again, hid its head under a blanket. They refused to join in the fight against terrorism, and in fact, did everything they could to jeopardize our own efforts in the fight against terror. John Stossel has it right
Several members of the Video Professor team had the chance to hear ABC 20/20 anchor John Stossel speak about what’s really ailing America. The event was the annual Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau Golden Torch Awards dinner. Stossel held up a pocket copy of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Now Stossel says, the government adds fifty thousand pages of new regulations every year. One reason Stossel says is that it takes more time to get permits than it actually takes to construct a new building. We couldn’t agree more.

Nomination part Deux
President Bush announced his nomination for Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court on Monday. As you know, Harriet Miers withdrew last week, which is sad because despite what you heard or thought about her qualifications, she never got a chance to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Our court system is all about due process, yet she never was afforded the opportunity.

Let’s hope the folks inside the beltway give the process a chance this time around with Judge Samuel Alito. Write your Senators, tell them to ease up on the grandstanding and stick with the process. It’s served us well for hundreds of years.

Time to raise the bar folks
Words like “Nuclear Option” and “Armageddon” are being tossed around Washington so often these days, it seems like we’re back to the cold war days of the 1960s. Except it’s Democrats and Republicans instead of the United States and the old Soviet Union.

This sort of rhetoric is insulting to the vast majority of Americans who expect more from our elected representatives and the media that eggs them on. Is it too much to expect even a little dignity in the process?

Good Night and Good Luck
I hope you’ve had the chance to see Good Night and Good Luck, the story of legendary CBS newsman Ed Murrow, who along with producer Fred Friendly took on political bully Senator Joe McCarthy. McCarthy, destroyed countless lives in the 1950’s during his infamous witch-hunts.

Murrow took him on, and McCarthy ended up being rebuked by the very Senate he worked in, later dying alone and disgraced.

But in this age of the Internet, McCarthy’s tactics are worth remembering. He’d make up the most preposterous charges, with absolutely no evidence and announce them on national television. And once out there, the damage was done.

Today, anyone can make up and say the most ridiculous and outrageous things about good and honest people on the Internet, and once out there, again, the damage is done. And sadly, we don’t have someone like Murrow to help us out this time.

So, see this movie. It’s likely to win a bunch of Academy Awards, especially for David Strathairn’s performance as Murrow. But pay attention to McCarthy’s tactics, as they’re being used right now to cyber-smear many innocent people.

Rosa Parks 1913-2005
In 1955, Seamstress Rosa Parks took a seat on a bus in Montgomery, AL. When a white man demanded her seat, she refused. Back in those days, people of color were supposed to sit in the back of the bus. Her act of peaceful defiance started a movement that has allowed all of us to move to the front of the bus. Rosa Parks died this week at the age of 92. Rosa Parks proved, that regardless of gender of the color of one’s skin, that one person can make a difference.

Got sense of humor?
Major League Baseball is a tad upset with the folks that put milk on your table every day. A Dairy Association spot running during the series was about a player getting pulled aside for a performance-enhancing product. Of course the product was milk. Some of the MLB folks were not amused. Which proves they still don’t get it, and are in desperate need of a sense of humor.

Although there are plenty of smiles in Chicago! 4 Straight. Wow!

A day at the races or, how I learned how to advertise at 200 MPH

If you haven’t heard of Danica Patrick, you soon will, regardless of whether or not you’re a racing fan. I got to know Danica through her fiancé, who is my personal trainer. After watching Danica race, I was hooked and knew I had to partner with her to promote Video Professor. About the only spot on Danica or her car that had any space left for a logo was on top of her helmet. So the last two races of the season, race fans got to see the Videoprofessor.com logo from her onboard camera.

Danica wrapped up the season Oct 16 at Fontana, CA and while she was taken out by a wreck late in the race, (It was the other driver’s fault, who must have been upset to be driving a pink car and getting passed by a girl) Danica still took Indy Racing League Rookie of the Year honors, was 2005Indianapolis 500 Rookie of Year, won several poles, led a bunch of laps and I do believe she’ll win a checkered flag or two next season.

The folks who founded this country were a pretty smart bunch. One of their best ideas was the separation of powers into Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. All independent of each other. The idea was to keep one person or group from grabbing too much power. It’s one of the reasons they told old King George to take a hike.

With the nomination of Harriet Miers causing such a stir in the news, it’s important to remember how the system works. The President of the United States gets to pick someone to join the Supreme Court. But the Senate in its ‘advise and consent” rule has to approve it. Before they vote yes or no, the nominee gets to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee, made up of members of both parties, so the committee can fairly ascertain if the nominee is suitable. Granted, politics enters the process, but after a few hundred years it continues to work pretty well.

But the hue and cry of politicos and pundits is deafening. And the voracious appetites of the 24-hour news channels give everyone with an opinion (and you know what they say about opinions!) far more than their fifteen minutes of fame.

Miers may, or may not be qualified to serve on the court. But can we tone down the rhetoric and political grandstanding and let the process work instead? You, me, we, can all put in our two cents. E-mail, write or call your Senators and tell them how you feel. It’s a grand system, tried and true, but it’s getting short shrift to name calling, half-truths and just plain baloney. The last time I checked, it’s still government of, by and for the people. And that’s us.

Would you like fries with that Mr. Hussein?
Saddam Hussein went on trial this week. And while further proceedings have been delayed until next month, there is something very satisfying about seeing Hussein in the docket. Of course he’s being offered every right his own victims never received. Let’s hope justice prevails, and quickly.

Astros vs Sox (no, the other ones)
Houston has never been. And it’s almost been a century for Chicago, and that one involved some legal issues. Pitching will be the key.

GO DANICA!
I hope you get the chance to watch the Indy Racing League season finale on October 16. You can watch the race on ESPN. Look for the onboard camera shots from Danica Patrick’s #16. You’ll see the VideoProfessor.com logo on top of Danica’s helmet. Danica is this year’s IRL Rookie of the Year, and also took top rookie honors at the Indianapolis 500. Rumor became fact as Apple unveiled a video version of its hugely popular iPod. Priced at $299 and $399, it features a 2.5-inch screen and can hold up to 150 hours of video. It also displays still pics and plays music. And it’s thinner than the original!

Better thing?
DISH Network beat Apple to the punch, and at first blush, perhaps a better product with its own pocket video player. It’s called PocketDish, and while it costs more than the iPod it certainly seems to be much more versatile, especially in how you can input video. I LOVE THESE TOYS!!

NASA starting to get 2001 in 2005 but just barely.
One of the great sequences in the landmark film, 2001-A Space Odyssey; starts right at the beginning when the Pam-Am Shuttle docks with the space station. Director Stanley Kubrick and author Arthur C. Clark understood the future of space way back in 1968. Along with Pan-Am, (sadly just a memory) several other commercial brands were featured including hotel and communications companies.

NASA blazed America’s trail into space, but is now just beginning to understand that commercialization of space is the future. It’s one area where the Russians did beat us, sending up private passengers to the International Space Station for 20 million a trip. And now entrepreneur extraordinaire Richard Branson is teaming with Burt Ruttan for sub-orbital hops into space for 200-thousand a trip.
Both are way out of my budget, but this is just the beginning.

A huge tip of the hat to Bill O’Reilly of FOX News and Oprah Winfrey for their efforts going after child molesters. Bill O’Reilly makes it a point to skewer weak judges and hold state’s with even weaker laws, accountable. Oprah Winfrey, herself a victim of rape at the age of 9 years old, is personally handing out one hundred thousand dollar rewards to people who turn in these predators. There are thousands of them on the loose, sprung from jail after ridiculously short sentences behind bars. Once out, they blend into society. We need tougher laws, tougher judges and very awful jails to put them in for the rest of their lives.

Hurricane Relief Efforts
The long process of re-building lives and livelihoods is underway in states impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Many folks need to get back to work, and discovering that they need to improve their computing skills. Video Professor has just donated 70 computer tutorials to the Families First Resource Center in Picayune MS for their computer-learning lab. As similar efforts ramp up in the region, we’ll be working with other organizations as well, contributing where we can to make a difference.

Prank o’ the week
Some Navy Midshipmen from Annapolis are spending time at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs as part of an exchange program. Air Force plays Navy October 8, and if you’ve ever been in the military, you know all about rivalries between the service branches. On the AFA campus is an F4 Phantom, a fighter once flown by both the Navy and Air Force. Of course, the one at the Academy is normally painted in Air Force Colors, that is until the Middies painted it blue with Blue Angels logos! The reaction from the AFA cadets? They’re happy to settle it all on the football field. But just to be safe, the folks in Annapolis might want to post some extra guards!
